  • Lidstrom an All-Star for 10th straight time (AP)
Nicklas Lidstrom is headed to the NHL All-Star game for the 10th straight season, but for the first time as captain of the Stanley Cup champion. • Flames Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

The effort it took to beat the NHL's best team was top rate.

The Flames were aggressive on loose pucks, created all kinds of scoring chances and were the best team from the drop of the puck in beating the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday.

Now, it's important to use that formula against the league's worst team, the New York Islanders, on Thursday. They are last in the league and struggling mightily.

Calgary should be able to make short work of the Isles with a strong performance. However, if the Flames think they'll easily coast to victory with a half-hearted effort against the Islanders, they're sorely mistaken.

The Flames have lost their last two meetings with the Islanders, a byproduct of not putting in the needed effort against a team that can still bite back...

  • Flames stop Sharks 5-2 (AP)

San Jose Sharks' Joe Thornton, right, gets checked into the boards by Calgary Flames defenceman Robyn Regehr during the third period of an NHL hockey game in Calgary, Alberta on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009.

After getting pounded in their last meeting, the Calgary Flames were determined to get off to a fast start against the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday night. Daymond Langkow scored two goals and the Calgary Flames surged past the San Jose Sharks 5-2 on Tuesday night. "Obviously, they embarrassed us in their building and we didn't forget that and we came out and had a great start and won the game,"...

  • Blackhawks beat Flames 5-2 (AP)

Chicago Blackhawks goalie Nikolai Khabibulin (39), of Russia, blocks a shot by Calgary Flames' Craig Conroy during the third period of an NHL hockey game Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009, in Chicago. The Blackhawks won 5-2.

The Chicago Blackhawks returned to the United Center -- and their winning ways. Nikolai Khabibulin made 34 saves, Martin Havlat, Andrew Ladd and Patrick Sharp each had a goal and an assist, and the Blackhawks rebounded from consecutive losses to Detroit to beat the Calgary Flames 5-2 on Sunday night.

  • Flames recall C Lundmark (PA SportsTicker)
